Message for U.S. Citizens: Commercial Flight Departing Caracas Thursday, April 9

Event: Commercial Flight Departing Caracas Thursday, April 9

The Venezuela Affairs Unit (VAU) understands that there is one commercial flight available departing Caracas to Toluca, Mexico on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 9:00 am. This is a commercial flight operated by Conviasa and all arrangements are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Flight connections from Toluca must be within 12 hours of arriving in Toluca. Passengers must show connecting flight at Conviasa counter in Caracas. US citizens taking this flight are not at risk of U.S. government sanctions. The VAU and US Embassy Bogota cannot provide any assistance at all with making travel arrangements for this flight or any onward flights from Mexico to the United States.

Country-Specific Information:

  • On March 11, 2019, the U.S. Department of State announced the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from U.S. Embassy Caracas. All consular services, routine, and emergency, are suspended until further notice. The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela.

  • Venezuela has confirmed cases of COVID-19 within its borders.
  • On March 16, the Maduro regime announced a nationwide quarantine which bars movement between states with the exception of people that work in the transportation industry, security, healthcare, and food delivery industry until April 13. This quarantine has the possibility of being extended for an additional 30 days.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

  • Visit the interim government of Venezuela’s COVID-19 website for additional information.
  • On March 13, 2020, the Maduro regime announced the quarantine of all inhabitants of Venezuela and that those resident in Venezuela should practice social distancing. On March 16, 2020, restrictions were put in place to prohibit movement between the different states and cities in Venezuela.
  • On March 12, 2020, Maduro announced the suspension of flights between Colombia and Venezuela. On March 17, Maduro suspended all international travel until April 13. Land borders with Brazil and Colombia are closed. There is the possibility that these orders may be extended for an additional 30 days.
  • Travelers should be prepared for additional travel/movement restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice.
