Message for U.S. Citizens: Change in U.S. Passport Delivery from the United States

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas would like to inform all U.S. citizens that it changed the way it receives full validity U.S. passports from the United States.  The Embassy considered this change necessary in order to guarantee the security of your personal information.  We expect this will result in longer processing times for our passport and Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) applicants.  The Embassy will continue to notify all applicants by email when their passport and/or CRBA arrive to the Embassy in Caracas.

What if I need to travel before I receive my passport?

Many applicants already have planned travel prior to applying for their first U.S. passport or renewing their U.S. passport.  If you made travel plans prior to your passport appointment date, please bring a copy of your itinerary to your interview.  The ACS Unit will discuss with you the option of applying for an emergency passport, which you can use to travel before you receive your full validity passport.

What is an Emergency Passport?

The Embassy may issue a locally-printed emergency passport to U.S. citizens who have an urgent need to travel.  Please note that emergency passports are not available at the Consular Agency in Maracaibo.  You must be prepared to explain the nature of your emergency or present a paid and confirmed itinerary.  Emergency passports are unlike full validity passports in that they are only valid for up to 12 months and do not contain an electronic chip.  If you need to use your emergency passport to travel to a country other than the United States, you should be aware of that country’s entry/exit policies regarding machine readable passports and passport validity.

How do I apply for an Emergency Passport?

All applicants must request an appointment via the Embassy website and apply for an emergency passport in person at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas.  In most cases, the ACS Unit can approve and print an emergency passport on the same day of the application.  Applicants can pick up their approved and printed emergency passports at the ACS Unit after 3:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (excluding holidays).  Please visit the Embassy webpage here for more information about applying for an emergency passport.

How will I receive my Full Validity Passport if I apply for an Emergency Passport?

If you apply for an emergency passport, but still need to renew your full validity passport, you may apply for your full validity passport at the same time.  Alternatively, you may apply for your full validity passport when you are in the United States.  Once an applicant pays and applies for an emergency passport, they are entitled to a full validity passport free of charge.  Please keep in mind that you must retrieve your passport in the country in which you apply.  For example, if you apply for your full validity passport in Caracas, you must collect your passport at the Embassy in Caracas or via courier service.  If you choose to apply for your full validity passport in the United States, your passport will only be delivered to a U.S. address and cannot be delivered to Venezuela or to the U.S. Embassy in Caracas.
