Release Venezuelan Prisoners of Conscience

Mark C. Toner

This week’s Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) hearings painted a distressing picture of the conditions for prisoners of conscience in Venezuela, including inhumane treatment at the hands of prison officials. We reiterate our call for the release of those imprisoned for their political beliefs.

The Venezuelan Government unfortunately continues to block efforts by international NGOs to visit political prisoners and provide essential services. Their release would be an important first step in promoting a dialogue among all parties to address the serious challenges facing the Venezuelan people.
